**Legal fraternity announces boycott after crackdown on advocates**

CHENNAI: The police crackdown on advocates involved in cases pending since 2001 has triggered a hostile response from the legal fraternity, which has announced a one-day token boycott of all courts and tribunals on Tuesday.

A resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted at the emergency general body meeting of various Bar associations including the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association (TNAA), the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) and the Women Lawyers Association.

Noting with concern that at least half a dozen advocates have been arrested in various parts of the state already and nearly 40 advocates have been included in fresh cases, Bar leaders demanded the immediate release of all the arrested lawyers, besides protection for other lawyers from arrests.

In the morning, TNAA president S Prabakaran mentioned the matter before the first bench comprising acting Chief Justice RK Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan and said the entire advocate community felt threatened.

**Asking the higher judiciary not to push complaints from the Bar to cold storage, he said the former was oblivious of the powers vested with it. Refusing to file any petition in connection with the matter, Prabakaran said he was merely bringing the ground situation to the notice of the court.**

There were also demonstrations and slogan-shouting denouncing the police action.
