Husband-wife scuffles, dowry cases flood police helplines in Panchkula

At around 1 am on Saturday, a woman called up the police helpline complaining that she was beaten by her husband. The woman who identified herself as Charu, a resident of Sector 7, told the officials manning the helpline that her husband had been physically abusing her. A police party from the Sector 7 police post rushed to her house to find her husband drunk. The couple soon reached a compromise. Husband-wife scuffles, family property disputes and cases of nagging in-laws seeking dowry have become increasingly common in the city. Each day, around 10 complaints are received by the police, most of which however reach a comprise.
Nodal Officer of police helpline, Manjit Kaur, said, "Most complaints we receive from women are those of family disputes, in which they complain of harassment by husbands and in-laws. But, most are settled mutually".
In the last over one-and-half month, the helpline has received over 90 complaints apart from five to nine complaints that are received each day at the women's helpline number. The complaints are mostly related to family disputes, with women alleging that they are harassed by their in-laws and husbands. Police has also been receiving complaints of women receiving calls from unknown numbers and family members trying to usurp their property.
Recently, a woman from Sector 10 alleged that her sister-in-law was trying to grab her property that she received as a share from her in-laws, after her husband passed away. A complaint was also received on Friday from Sundarpur village, in which the woman alleged that her husband was harassing her to get dowry. She alleged that she recently got around 50,000 from her parents, but her husband had been insisting that she got at least Rs 10 lakh.
Police officials, however, said that they could not register several cases, as in most of them women withdrew complaints against their husbands after a while. Krishan Hooda, ACP, Panchkula headquarters, said that police had ensured that the helpline numbers were notified on police vehicles, as a result, the response from people had been encouraging.
